The diurnal Energy Balance Model (dEBM): a convenient surface mass balance solution for ice sheets in Earth system modeling

چکیده

Abstract. The surface mass balance scheme dEBM (diurnal Energy Balance Model) provides a novel interface between the atmosphere and land ice for Earth system modeling, which is based on energy of glaciated surfaces. In contrast to empirical schemes, accounts changes in Earth’s orbit atmospheric composition. only requires monthly forcing (precipitation, temperature, shortwave longwave radiation, cloud cover). It also computationally inexpensive, makes it particularly suitable investigate sheets' response long-term climate change. After calibration validation, we analyze Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) simulations representing two warm states: simulation mid-Holocene (approximately 6000 years before present) projection an extreme emission scenario extends year 2100. former period features intensified summer insolation while 21st century characterized by reduced outgoing radiation. Specifically, whether temperature–melt relationship, as used temperature-index methods, remains stable under changing Our results indicate that relation sensitive orbital timescales but mostly invariant projected warming century.

Mass balance of polar ice sheets.

Recent advances in the determination of the mass balance of polar ice sheets show that the Greenland Ice Sheet is losing mass by near-coastal thinning, and that the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, with thickening in the west and thinning in the north, is probably thinning overall. The mass imbalance of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet is likely to be small, but even its sign cannot yet be determined. Lar...

Surface mass-balance changes of the Greenland ice sheet

Mass loss from the Greenland ice sheet over the past decade has caused the impression that the ice sheet has been behaving anomalously to the warming of the 1990s. We have reconstructed the recent (1866–2005) surface mass-balance (SMB) history of the Greenland ice sheet on a 5 5 km grid using a runoff-retention model based on the positive degree-day method. The model is forced with new datasets...

Recent energy balance of Earth

A recently published estimate of Earth’s global warming trend is 0.63 ± 0.28 W/m, as calculated from ocean heat content anomaly data spanning 1993–2008. This value is not representative of the recent (2003–2008) warming/cooling rate because of a “flattening” that occurred around 2001–2002. Using only 2003–2008 data from Argo floats, we find by four different algorithms that the recent trend ran...

Mass balance of the Antarctic ice sheet.

The Antarctic contribution to sea-level rise has long been uncertain. While regional variability in ice dynamics has been revealed, a picture of mass changes throughout the continental ice sheet is lacking. Here, we use satellite radar altimetry to measure the elevation change of 72% of the grounded ice sheet during the period 1992-2003. Depending on the density of the snow giving rise to the o...

Metabolic balance sheets.

toichiometric analysis has the same function in biochemistry as book-keeping has in business. Both deal with the inputs and outputs in flow systems, and studying the stoichiometric structure of a metabolic network might seem only slightly more exciting than a visit to an accountant's office. Times change, however, and progress in systems biology will involve paying closer attention to stoichiom...
